Tablescaping Ideas: How to create a Beautiful Dinner Setting

May 8, 2021

One of the hottest interior trends right now is tablescaping. Given the times we are in it's only natural that we are all looking to create the most appealing environment around us at the moment. Tablescaping is basically the art of setting your table, to look achingly beautiful and make a fabulously special home entertaining experience.

Let's face it, we are now getting used to socialising outdoors and dining al fresco even in the British Springtime. Dining at home and dinner parties are now the thing to do for all ages (within the rule of six obviously) and the pleasure in creating a tablescaped dinner is immense for both the host and the guests.

Make it special

Thinking about colour schemes and styling details elevates a an alfresco lunch or dinner party from average to fabulous with a little extra planning and co-ordination. Of course the table needs to be set with the appropriate utensils and cutlery but by adding some gorgeous cotton napkins, bud vases with floral displays, fairy lights and candles it creates an atmosphere and a sense of occasion.

Just like planning an outfit for an event from hair accessories, makeup, clothes and jewellery, just apply to same attention to detail to tablecloths, napkins, candles, centrepiece displays and flowers. Consider which colours and style complement the food being served, the season and occasion.

We've put together some examples of products that work fabulously together so you don't have to!

Casual Dinner Party with Friends

Blue Themed Tablescaping

A classic blue and white block printed table cloth gives a fresh look and the co-ordinated cotton napkins work beautifully to give a cohesive aesthetic. Squishy velvet feather filled cushions add a little luxe vibe and a soft blue pom pom edged blanket over a chair adds warmth for when the weather isn't quite as Mediterranean as we'd like. Bottle lights in clear wine bottles add a soft light that is pretty and gentle. The zinc round tray adds a metallic touch and is ideal for fetching drinks and nibbles from the kitchen to the garden. The sea salt and sage scented candle gives a delicate hint of summer at the seaside, and the cotton stab stitch throw is ideal for adding another layer as the sun sets.

Bee Themed Afternoon Tea

Choosing a theme is great way to tablescape it helps to create vision and creativity. Bees symbolise community and communication, they also keep our ecosystem balanced, combined with their sunny yellow colour these make a great basis for this look.

Our yellow ochre bee print cotton napkins and table runner are a great base for the table. Combine with zingy yellow dinner candles and a pretty posy vase that can be filled with fresh flowers. The milk jug continues the theme and for the ladies we have some fabulous "Queen Bee" mugs and coasters. The bee mini mugs work brilliantly for childrens drinks or small lungo or espresso coffees. The Queen Bee bar chopping board is perfect for slicing fruit for drinks or cocktails.

Pretty In Pink

If you can't decide on a theme then colour is a great way to co-ordinate a look. Layer up textures to create opulence and a tactile feel. This pretty pink colour palette would work beautifully indoors or al fresco for daytime or evening entertaining.

The block printed table cloth is 100% cotton and create a sense of occasion. The pillar candle is a dark dusky pink and is scented with delicate Peony flowers. The coral pink and white blankets are made from recycled plastic water bottles, but feel as soft as wool. They're a great example of an upcycled product that is a real talking point, there are matching outdoor rugs and cushions too. The soft velvet cushion is perfect for adding a little comfort particularly to garden chairs. Detailed floral coasters and retro style pink and white paper straws add to the pink aesthetic. The pink and gold splattered mugs are perfect for a warming cup of tea if you're socialising outdoors! The warm white bottle lights take you from day to night with minimal fuss.

Luxe Neutral

For a calming, luxurious affair you need to up the luxe stakes to make it super tactile and cosy. Once you've chosen your table cloth, add polka dot gold dinner candles to add a little reflective light. The over-sized double wick rustic candles on the aged terracotta plate add a variety of height and offer a good textural contrast. The large etched star wine glasses (which are also perfect for cocktails) match perfectly with the co-ordinating water glasses.

The pineapple is a symbol of friendship and hospitality for this crewelwork footstool adds a nod to this as well as being a handy spare seat or tray rest. Large, soft and snuggly caramel faux fur throws and simple cotton blankets are perfect for layering over a bench or garden chair but also add comfort when the clouds are out or the sun goes down.

Tablescaping is a small joy that can take a few minutes or a few hours depending on what level you want to take it to, it's all about creating a little magic at the dinner table.
